CAP works with the public, elected leaders and local and state government agencies to enhance Rockingham County's rural character, urban spaces and natural and cultural resources.
CAP strives to achieve these goals by providing timely and accurate information to foster good public policy in transportation and land use planning and land conservation.
CAP Background
The Community Alliance for Preservation Inc. is a non-profit Virginia corporation granted tax-exempt status by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. We became a non-profit association in 2003 and a non-profit corporation in 2007. We are supported by donations from individuals and charitable foundations. Gifts to CAP are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
CAP was formed in 1999 by citizens in the southeastern portion of Rockingham County concerned that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and county officials wanted to build a loop road east of I-81. The proposed highway would have opened the county's core agricultural reserve and historic battlefields to development, in direct conflict with the county's comprehensive plan.
Since that time, CAP has broadened its mission to encourage an array of land use planning, conservation and economic development strategies that will protect Rockingham's unique rural character, traditional villages and towns, our historic places and agricultural economy.
